Jetty Squid Fishing
How To Catch Squid Off A Jetty
Have you ever wanted to squid fish like a PRO but you don’t have a boat? Don’t worry, squid fishing like a pro can be as easy as walking up a jetty and casting your line out! I’ll tell you what you need to look out for to have success when fishing from a jetty and it won’t break your hip pocket like a boat would!
Conditions - Weather, Tides and Times
Weather – If it’s a calm day with minimal to no wind and the sun is shining you’ll want to be racing to the jetty! The squid are often biting when the waters are clear and calm, so after a thunderstorm when the waters are discoloured is not a good time for squid fishing.
Tides – It’s best to fish for squid when the tide is coming in or going out, especially if the tides are high.
Times – As they say “the early bird catches the worm”, in this case, “the early fisherman/women catches the squid!”. When fishing for squid off a jetty I have had the most success during first light, and when the sun is going down. Dawn and dust are the best times for squid fishing!
Where To Cast
When fishing off a jetty it is best to look for patches of seagrass beds or reef. I tend to fish in no larger than 6m of water so I can continue to see the patches of seegrass and the squid being attracted by the teaser. If you can see a jetty with lots of ink stains it’s generally a good indication of the good spots on a jetty.
Night Time Squid Jigging
If you decide to fish at night time the best place to cast your line is out from a light post. Squid tend to be drawn towards the light. Unlike the day, I have noticed that when fishing for squid at night time they tend to attack their food around the edge of the weedy areas on patches of sand.
